Leadership Lessons for business owners from the Navy Seals

Leadership Lessons for business owners from the Navy Seals

By , October 4, 2014

After a great keynote session to close the annual Exit Planning Institute confernece in Dallas Fort Worth, by Admiral Ray Smith ( Retired ) Commander of the Navy Seals, it is worthwhile to reflect on the application of these lessons and how they might apply to business owners ( all of whom lead teams – though probably not for the sames stakes ). Admiral Smith highlighted the training of Navy Seals ( youtube video class 224 ) and spoke about the training of their minds and attitude ( its not about fitness they are fit already ) . A few of his key lessons were:

Maximise opportunties to work with your employees.

“Know” your employees – they have lives outside the workplace.

Avoid Empowerment – Enabling your employees is the key to their self-esteem and productivity.

Leaders are responsible for Strategy, but they must retain a working knowledge of the organisations tactical environment.

Basic leadership maths = Authority + Responsibility = Accountability.

and finally .. Aristotle had it right! ” We are what we repeatedly do” – excellence then is not an act but a habit.
